A close friend of Sridar and from a neighbouring village, like Sridar, Vengatesan has not to look much further than the limitless source of inspiration of life in his village. Gleaned from his observation and close proximity with his subjects, his paintings sublimely demonstrate his subjects resounding simplicity and integrity; the natural consequence of their down to earth lifestyles.
Vengatesan is unafraid to delve into the wild and ghoulish aspects of our nature. The side of the 'razors edge' between madness and sanity, his haunting characters stand upon, undecipherable. Cut off from the world a hermit or the inhabitants of a remote village might appear wild and carefree, content within their freedom from modernity.
Amongst the themes and media he explores, his handling of watercolour is particularly fascinating. Breaking all conventions in the process of washing, layering and texturing, his paint embodies the translucent atmosphere of watercolour, alongside the richness, opacity and depth of oils.
Complex and expressive distortions, akin to cubism, at times disregard representation in favour of a capricious touch. Above all, Vengatesan's unique and soulful portraits display an empathy and sensitive understanding he shares with his subjects raw, uncomplicated and yet mysterious lives. |
