Sekar studied under many highly respected and renowned artists such as, A. Doss during his stay at Lalit Kala Academy in Madras and has since devoted many years to teaching at Pondicherry College of Arts, where he is an invaluable source of inspiration to all his students. Over the years he has created a diverse portfolio, much of which we are honoured to show.

Especially influenced by Andre Masson and inspired by Ernst, Durer and Redon, Sekar's style is consistent yet diverse, interweaving recurring threads, reflecting his vision redolent with hidden meaning, eroticism and an enigmatic otherworldliness. A process of metamorphosis abounds, androgynous figures burst forth protuberances of beaks, trunks, and wings, transforming them into fantastic mythical creatures.

The cockerel holds particularly iconic status in Sekar’s world, appearing metamorphic and in all shapes and sizes, reminiscent of Siquerios’s ‘Death and Funeral of Cain’. One can observe the cockerel amidst various figures entwined in an intimate embrace, the female receptive and submittal to the strutting cockerel, heralding the dawn and announcing his virile intentions. Most intriguing is the iconic union of Sekar’s cockerel and man, into his most charismatic creation whose extra-ordinary nature, confronts us with an all-knowing glance.

Sekar's sublime draughtsmanship and bold use of line and form, balances a transcendental and ethereal use of shade and colour. While exploring the power of chromatics, his refined decorative touch blends colour and texture interweaving with the specificity, sharpness and contrast of light-emanating blacks and whites.

Sekar conjures up a world unique yet somehow familiar, grotesque yet touching, erotic yet nurturing; reaching out and beckoning our gaze to bring its figures to life and allow them to draw us into the depths of their world.
