"Sri. P. Manikam is one of the most senior artists from South India who has consistently contributed exceptional works of art for the past forty-five years and was the deserving recipient of the Lalit Kala Academy National award in 1997.

We studied Fine Art together in the early sixties at the Madras College of Arts, and along with a group of teachers and students under the guidance of K.C.S Paniker, were influenced by the emergence of the Madras art movement.

I can still remember his works, many of which were studies with a strong orientation towards black and white and later on line, colour and decorative pattern, sourced from tribal and folk art and India’s rich cultural traditions.

Asides his inspired works of art, Sri Manikam is an acknowledged art teacher and during his tenure at the Jawhar Bala Bhavan and Bharathiyar Palkalai Koodam in Pondicherry, he has effected the tremendous kindling of interest in art amongst talented and receptive students. Through his sustained efforts as an artist and teacher he has been instrumental in giving Pondicherry’s contemporary artists due recognition"
