Abel’s paintings titled ‘Gypsy’ are the result of his exploration of a gypsy encampment near Pondicherry. While observing their dwellings and lifestyle he glimpsed a romantic ideal and freedom amongst a sense of dignity amidst their relatively impoverished conditions. Theirs is a simple and relatively harsh lifestyle, yet relieved from the complexities and confusion of modern day life.
Abel’s portraits exude a gritty and realistic quality proportionate to the austere nature of their lifestyle and a rather surreal, colourful and ethereal aura, reflecting something of the transcendental state of the freedom and mystery their lifestyle embodies. |
